In 1991 the Holy Cross Convent High School, Thane added a feather to their cap with the opening of NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) .The idea of starting the NIOS was first mooted by Ms. Bernadette Pimenta, who roped in Ms. Clara Correia and Ms. Lena Colasco as Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator. Ours was the first open school in Thane and the third in the city of Mumbai.
It was started under the auspicious Congregation of the Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod at Thane. The Headmistress Sr. Rosita Jacques consented to the idea and gave her full support seeing the many drop outs who had no way of continuing their education. The other Headmistresses who followed gave their full cooperation till date.
To begin with there were only 38 students on roll coming from different walks of life. Male, female, rich, poor, orphans with no distinction of caste or creed. NIOS caters to the drop outs or those who have no education at all.
Unlike regular educational institutions students are more free and able to choose subjects they like at their own space of time. The Choice of medium is only in English and Hindi. Name of the course is Secondary (class X) and Senior Secondary (Class XII). Admission is valid for five years. After passing 10th and 12th they could follow the regular stream of education. Candidate should complete 14 years and above to apply for this course.
In the last 22 years we have seen students beaming with a great smile as they pass out and are now able to continue their further education.
